Spooky Season Photoshoot Ideas

October is here, and I am soooooo ready for it. The cooler air, the colourful leaves, the excuse to watch a horror movie on a weeknight, this is my favourite time of the year.

It’s also the perfect time to have a little fun with photos. You don’t need a big occasion or an elaborate costume. You just need an idea you’re excited about and someone willing to play along. Whether you’re planning a solo shoot, a date with your partner, an outing with friends, or something ridiculous with your coworkers, here are a few spooky season photoshoot ideas I’d love to bring to life.

Try the Pumpkin Head Trend

A carved pumpkin, a fall outfit, and a field or wooded path: that’s the whole idea. Pumpkin head photos can be eerie, romantic, or completely silly depending on what you do with them.

Bring your partner and carve pumpkins that show off your personalities. Get a group of friends together for a pumpkin headed walk through the leaves. Or do a solo shoot that looks like you wandered out of a Halloween story. If wearing a pumpkin doesn’t appeal to you, we can still have fun holding one in front of your face or using it as a prop.

Give the Sheet Ghost Trend your own Twist

I will never get tired of a good sheet ghost photo. There’s something so funny about an ordinary little ghost doing very ordinary things: drinking coffee, browsing a bookstore, sitting on a park bench, or tagging along on a date.

My current favourite version is ghosts doing their jobs. Imagine a ghost answering emails, serving coffee, working behind a shop counter, or gathering with the rest of the team for a staff photo. If your coworkers are up for it, please tell me. I would have way too much fun photographing your haunted workplace.

For friends or couples, we could make it feel like a ghostly day out: two ghosts sharing a coffee, wandering through the trees, or posing for the most awkward family portrait ever.

Gather your Coven

Witchy photos can go in so many directions. You could dress up with friends for a dramatic walk through the woods, plan a cozy evening with candles and old books, or keep it simple with dark outfits, boots, and a little autumn magic.

This idea works just as well for a solo session. You don’t need a full costume unless you want one. Bring the version of witchy that feels like you; playful, powerful, mysterious, or a mix of all three.

Have a Ghostface Moment

If you love Scream, a Ghostface inspired shoot could be such a fun way to lean into Halloween. We could make it campy and playful, like a masked figure lurking in the background while you and your friends carry on with your day. Or we could go for moody, cinematic portraits with a little more suspense.

The best part is coming up with a tiny story together. Who’s in on the joke? Who hasn’t noticed the masked figure yet? What happens in the next frame? Those little details are what make a shoot memorable.

Step into your Favourite Horror Movie

You don’t have to recreate a movie scene exactly to capture the feeling you love about it. Maybe it’s the outfits, the setting, the lighting, or that moment where the characters realize something strange is happening.

Pick your favourite horror movie and tell me what you love about its look. Then we can create a scene that feels like your version of it. This would be especially fun with a group of friends who each want a part to play—or with a partner who is willing to fully commit to the drama.

Make your Own Fall Album Cover

Spooky isn’t the only way to celebrate October. Some of the best fall photos feel like they belong on the cover of an album you’d listen to while driving through the Valley with the windows cracked.

Taylor Swift’s folklore and evermore always come to mind for me: quiet woods, cozy layers, soft light, and a little bit of longing. Think of an artist or album you love, then use its mood as a starting point. We can create something that feels personal to you, whether that’s a thoughtful solo portrait, a dreamy couples session, or a full band moment with your friends.

Let’s make something fun this October

Your photos don’t have to look like anyone else’s. They can be sweet, spooky, cinematic, absurd, or all of the above. If one of these ideas made you immediately think, I need to do that, I want to hear about it.

Tell me who you’d bring, which idea you’re dreaming up, and how far you want to take it. Let’s make a Halloween themed session that feels like your kind of fun.
